About Ruth Turnbull

Writer

I've always been a storyteller, writing my first book at age 14 on my parents electric typewriter, which I soon commandeered as my own.  I love developing characters and exploring narratives.

An award-winning non-fiction and poetry writer and editor, I have worked in marketing, communications, change and employee engagement, crafting copy for internal magazines, digital channels and promotional marketing materials.

My passion has always been fiction, whether writing short stories, books or plays.  I've had the pleasure of seeing two of my plays brought to life at Edinburgh's Traverse Theatre, the home for new writing in Scotland, as part of their youth writers initiative.

I was excited by the publication of my debut novel, Immortal, Part 1, and now I'm pleased to say that the sequel, Immortal, Part 2, is also available to buy now in ebook and paperback from Amazon and in high street stores worldwide.

Why I love to sing

Singing is fantastic for your positive mental health. It releases endorphins in the brain which make you feel happy.  For the last eight years I've been the assistant director of my workplace a cappella choir and worked closely with choirs in special education. No auditions, everyone welcome - we encouraged inclusivity and an outlet to help people de-stress. Singing is a wonderful activity in the workplace and in schools, helping to improve confidence, concentration and memory and giving you that boost of energy you need to get through the day.

Interested in starting a choir?

If you're based in the UK and would like to talk about the positive mental health benefits of establishing a choir in your workplace or school you can contact me via my Facebook page.

My Music

While I have arranged several a cappella songs for my choir, I didn't believe I could write a song, until my friend and now song writing partner, Shaun Frearson, asked if I'd like to do just that.  So I went with what I knew and wrote a poem.  Shaun's beautiful composition turned that poem into our debut single 'Stay Strong', which is available to buy now.  It's wonderful to be able to bring together the two things I'm passionate about and Shaun and I are already hard at work on an EP.
